What I Would Teach Myself About Business That Would Make Me 10X More Successful

I love time travel movies. I love Back To The Future, I love Time Cop, I love anything to do with travelling into the past and into the future. Oh, and I love H.G Wells Time Machine… awesome movie.

But the good thing about living in the now is that it can be a reflective period to ask ourselves what could we have done differently, or better? In fact, as a habit builder I strongly endorse this as it allows you to be constantly improving on things the next time around. So, the question I asked of myself lately is this:

If I could go back to when I first started out running a business what advise would I give myself that would make me 10X more successful if I were to apply that knowledge?

It might come as no surprise to you that my answer would be to form small habits early on and become a man of integrity.

If I had the opportunity to time travel back to myself say 10 years ago here’s what I would like to say, and hope that my younger self would actually take note:

Kevin, I come to you from the future. I have some important advise I need to tell you that will dramatically improve your life and make you awesome! It’s a few simple rules that won’t take a lot of your time to do, yet will give you the foundations to running a successful business and gain you respect and trust amongst your customers and peers. In fact, it will literally only take you two minutes to do every day and won’t hurt you or cause any unnecessary stress. In fact, it’s so simple you probably won’t believe me if I tell you, but you must believe me… the world in 2015 is full of people who don’t follow through on their commitments. It stinks here. So few people are trusted any more which makes this information ever so more valuable to you. So, here it goes.

Before your first coffee every morning have a glass of water. Whether you have your first coffee in Starbucks, drink water first.
Always be kind and courteous to your customers. Listen to what they say. They can help formulate your next product.

Continue to do these small micro commitments each day until you do these without question and automatically. Do not give up on this. It’s critically important.

Now, build upon these foundations of habits by upping your obligations. Very soon you will start to become a man of your word.  Then pretty soon people will start to see you do what you say you’re going to do. You will soon become a man of integrity.

After all, what good is your word if you don’t stand by it.

These simple rules have helped me grow from three to 22 staff by simply implementing steps that I will follow through on. I am not asking you to do a whole lot – I am simply asking you to help yourself here and form these small habits now so as you and I in the future can do amazingly awesome big things that bit sooner!
